3 Ways I can use Blogs In My Information Literacy Class - Library 102

1) Post my syllabus, class assignments, due dates, semester calendar listing any vacation or other days when school will be closed.

2) Use the blog to have class collaboration on assignments, a place where students can interact with each other and the instructor. I can see a benefit also in having a blog to collaborate with my colleagues who are teaching similar courses in college or in high schools.

3) Have students keep up on assignments even when they miss class or I have to cancel a class. I believe that using the blog will encourage students to be more accountable. I also believe that students will have more of an ownership in the class because of the interactiveness of the blog. It is also a great place for students to post assignments.

Hi Judy,

Do think getting colleagues to collaborate with you will be difficult? In one of my classes this semester a professor mentioned how jealously some of his colleagues guard their ideas and materials. Could this be a challenge to how effectively we network with blogs?

I like your graphic, it goes very nicely with the background!

Hi Lynne,
Thanks for your comments. I do think that sometimes certain people will be reluctant to share their ideas and materials. I have been lucky and have not run into that very often, but I know other people who have experienced the negativity of colleagues who may be feeling insecure about sharing their information. It's too bad because I believe we can all benefit by sharing what we know.

Judy,
I think your idea of using a blog to create a "community of practice" is a great idea. The more networking we do with people in similar teaching situations, the more we all learn.

It's almost a shame to know that people who can work together to improve the profession choose not to do so. I unfortunately have run into those people and the only thing that I can say is that it's their loss. If everyone would share, our lives would be easier. I am fortunate now to work at a school where everyone shares everything and it has proved to be successful because students schedules change constantly, especially in the first few weeks of school and keeping the same materials make it an easier transition for both the students and the teachers. Feel free to ask me for advise or help in anything!!

Judy,

You have some good ideas on your blog. I like the notion of using a blog as a means of connectivity when classes are cancelled or missed. As I have not really been in the world of teaching, I was surprised by some of the comments regarding how zealously some educators guard their materials. I would hope that ones colleagues could put education above squabbling for credit. The blogosphere definitely offers some good opportunities for cooperative learning and teaching.
